Pediatric Cleanings & Exams

Routine checkups and cleanings are one of the best ways to keep your child’s smile healthy, comfortable, and cavity-free. During these visits, our team examines your child’s teeth, gums, and soft tissues, checks for any early signs of cavities or other concerns, and evaluates oral hygiene habits and risk factors. We also gently clean the teeth to remove plaque and tartar, apply fluoride when recommended, and take X-rays as needed to monitor what may not be visible during the exam. These consistent preventive visits help us catch small issues early, support healthy habits at home, and give your child the best chance at a strong, healthy smile.

Pediatric Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is an important part of helping children build strong, cavity-resistant teeth. In the right amount, fluoride helps protect enamel, reduce the risk of tooth decay, and strengthen teeth after routine cleanings. During visits, our team may recommend a topical fluoride treatment based on your child’s age, cavity risk, brushing habits, and fluoride exposure at home. We also help parents understand safe fluoride use, including how much toothpaste to use, when supplements may or may not be needed, and how to avoid too much fluoride. Our goal is to make cavity prevention simple, safe, and personalized for your child’s smile.

Pediatric Digital X-Rays

Digital x-rays, a quick and efficient method for capturing images of your child's dental health, are used only when deemed necessary by the dentist. Typically, x-rays are recommended every year, though children with a higher risk of oral disease may need more frequent scans.

Orthodontics

Orthodontic care focuses on how the teeth and jaws develop and align as your child grows. At every recall exam, we evaluate your child’s bite and can often identify signs of future orthodontic needs at a very young age. By watching how the baby teeth and jaws line up, we may be able to give parents an early “heads up” that braces or other orthodontic treatment could be needed once the permanent teeth begin coming in. Addressing alignment concerns can help support comfortable chewing, proper function, healthy jaw development and a straighter smile.

We continue monitoring your child as they transition into their permanent teeth and will let you know if an orthodontic examination is recommended. When early signs of misalignment are present, we often suggest an orthodontic consultation around age 7 or 8, once several permanent teeth and the 6-year molars have erupted. An orthodontic evaluation may include a visual examination along with X-rays and other diagnostic records to better understand your child’s bite and determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Pediatric Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a simple, preventive way to protect your child’s back teeth from cavities. Because molars and premolars often have deep grooves and pits that can trap food and bacteria, even great brushing and flossing may not always reach every spot. Sealants create a thin, tooth-colored protective layer over those chewing surfaces to help keep cavity-causing buildup out. The process is quick, non-invasive, and especially helpful for permanent molars as they come in. During routine checkups, our team will continue to monitor your child’s sealants and repair or replace them as needed so their smile stays protected for years to come.

Nutritional Counseling

A healthy diet plays a big role in keeping your child’s smile strong and cavity-free. At Triangle Pediatric Dentistry, our nutritional counseling and diet recommendations are designed to help families understand how everyday choices, from snacks and meals to juice, sports drinks, and bedtime beverages, can affect a child’s teeth. Our doctors encourage milk or water with meals, water between meals, limited sugary or acidic drinks, balanced snack routines, and tooth-friendly options like protein-rich foods, fruits, and vegetables. We also help parents navigate special dietary needs, physician-recommended diets, picky eating, and busy-family habits in a practical, judgment-free way so your child can build healthy routines that support both their smile and their overall wellbeing.

Oral Habits

Thumb, finger, and pacifier habits are common in babies and young children, and in many cases, they are a normal part of early development. During routine visits, our team monitors your child’s bite, tooth eruption, and jaw growth to make sure oral habits are not creating long-term concerns. While many children stop these habits on their own, we can help parents understand when it may be time to wean from a pacifier, encourage thumb or finger habit changes, or consider additional support if a habit begins affecting the teeth or jaw. Our approach is gentle, positive, and practical, helping families guide their child toward healthier habits without shame, stress, or pressure.
